Above are the scans for this WWII General Service Pin, made of silver, with a good functional spinner type attachment.
These pins were issued to returning soldiers who had fought overseas and were on furlow, or wounded. In those days young men who did not serve had "problems", on occasion, with those citizens of the country who had sacrificed and done their part. Service age young men, who were not in uniform were often considered as "cowards", despite their language, religious beliefs, and "concientious objections".
This response to young men in public become so common that it was necessary to protect the soldiers who had served and came home, from being beaten-up, if they were out of uniform.
The solution was found in this badge in WWII, and a similar one in WWI. The message shown on the back of the pin really tells it all ...at the top is the service number of the owner, and under that we read "Penalty for misuse 500 dollars or six months imprisonment". This was done to protect the service man and to encourage the honest use of this devise. The government in those days didn't mince words ....
And then there were the Zute-suiters!! But that is another story ...
