You are viewing a rare WWII era Fairbairne -Sykes 2nd Pattern "Coke Bottle" style commando knife. This type was made of a one piece blade and grip, with a comfortable contoured sold brass overlay. Called "2nd pattern", and it is a very hard to find version in the condition of this one. This style was used very early in WWII by British coandos raiding the German installations on the French coast after Dunkirk miracle.

These were generally hard cast highgrade steel knives all made of one peice, blade and hilt, with the guard added after production. They were also used by the US, who may have produced their own similar pieces, as well as all the commonwealth foreces of the day. It is said that the length of the blade was exactly the usual distance from the shoulder blade to the heart, about 7 inches long. So they were quite a cherished silent killing machine, among even the enemy. This model has no hallmarks on the guard or on the end of the hilt.
