You are about to view the scans of a rare CEF 1st Canadian Construction Battalion collar badge. The collar has a straight pin attachment suggesting an officer grade badge, however on close inspection one an see that this badge originally had lug type attachments and was professionally altered and to have added this pin type attachment, so it is most likely a "sweetheart" badge .?


The No.1 Construction Battalion, was responsible for tunneling, trench construction, roadways, train tracks and general building and site maintenance, on the battlefield, in WWI.


Sweetheart badges?and pins were often given to a female loved one, by their soldier lover, son (usually), or father. They could have been supplied, for a cost, by the quartermaster or by a private organization, such as Birks. Most were simply converted uniform devises from the regiment, and were available in the tuck shops. Many, if not all of the battalions and regiments had this type of inspirational badge. As the war wore on, many of the givers were lost, and did not return. Consequently, these items became very cherished by their recipients. Therefore they are generally called sweethearts.

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
