In February 1916, due to the increasing need for timber for roads, railroads, and battlements along the ever lengthening front, the Canadian Government was asked
to train and send 1500 men to fill this urgent need. Two infantry battalions were converted to this purpose, the first being the 224th Battalion CEF which was operational by April12,1916.
Interestingly enough, the commander Colonel McDougal outfitted this battalion at his own expense. By November of that year, there were already six units working in the forests of England and
France. The 12th CEF Forestry Battalion was raised during the summer of 1917.
