Above you may view the scans for this rare WWI era "Victory" broach. These artifacts were given by soldiers to their loved ones usually upon leaving for the front. This particular piece is beautifully enameled, and the enameling has retained its bright colors and still shows clearly its fine design details. It is hallmarked "Sterling Silver [ P.G.S.] ", and comes with the ring box as found. View scans for details.

Sweetheart badges and pins were often given to a female loved one, by their soldier lover, son (usually), or father. They could have been supplied, for a cost, by the quartermaster or by a private organization, such as Birks Jewelers. Most were simply converted uniform devises from the regiment, and were available in the tuck shops. Many, if not all of the battalions and regiments had this type of inspirational badge. As the war wore on, many of the givers were lost, and did not return. Consequently, these items became very cherished by their recipients. Therefore they are generally called sweethearts?

They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning

... We will remember them.
